Rourkela: In an untoward incident, a jewellery shop owner was shot dead and his personal belongings were robbed by two bike-borne miscreants on the STI flyover in the Steel City, Friday night.

According to police sources, the deceased was identified as the owner of Maa Basanti Durga Jewellery Saroj Kumar Sahu, located at Ganesh Market of STI Road in Rourkela City. The shop owner closed his shop at around 10pm and was returning home on his motorbike.
After being followed for about a few metres, Sahu was intercepted by the bike-borne miscreants on the flyover bridge with an intention to loot. The ill-motivated men opened fire on him all of a sudden.
Saroj fell down on the spot after receiving gunshots on his head and stomach. Following which, the miscreants robbed him of the available hard cash as well as jewelleries which were kept in a handbag.
Raghunathpalli police immediately reached the spot when informed by some locals about the firing incident. Police rushed the shop owner in critical condition to Rourkela government hospital for treatment.
Later, he was shifted to IGH where the doctor declared him dead.
Rourkela Superintendent of Police K Siva Subramani along with other senior police officials from Raghunathpalli and Uditnagar police stations including a scientific team reached the firing site.
Police have registered a case in this connection and launched a probe. The miscreants will be arrested soon, a police official assured.
