Miscreants impersonate cops, loot gold ornaments in Puri

Puri: Two miscreants introduced themselves as cops to a woman and then decamped with her gold ornaments in this pilgrimage town Monday.

The victim has been identified as Binodini Nayak of Kumuti Sahi.

According to available information, Binodini along with her mother-in-law was returning home after buying provisions from college square.

Two motorcycle-borne youths waylaid them. Introducing themselves as policemen, the duo immediately resorted to moral policing. They asked the Binodini and Urmila as to why coming out with wearing gold jewellery at a time when snatchers were prowling everywhere.

They then asked the women to untie the jewellery. They untied three gold chains and two pair of gold bangles and one of them wrapped the ornaments in her saree end. Then the fake cops asked them to fold the ornaments in a piece of paper instead of wrapping them in their sarees.

Obeying them, Binodini was about to wrap the ornaments in a piece of paper when the duo snatched the paper packet and fled the spot before they could raise voice for help.

The place of occurrence is hardly 100 meters from the DSP’s office.

On being informed, police reached the spot and launched an investigation after going through the visuals captured in CCTV cameras installed in the locality.
