Jajpur: Ornaments worth several crores were looted by miscreants Monday from a jewellery shop located in Vyasanagar town of this district. A total of seven miscreants carried out the daring daylight heist. During the loot, the burglars also attacked some customers and employees of the shop who suffered injuries.

Police said that the jewellery shop situated on Jajpur road has been operational for more than two decades now. They stated that around 1.30pm Monday afternoon, two persons entered the shop posing as customers. One of them was looking at ornaments while the other went to the toilet. It is suspected that the man who went to the toilet, called the other miscreants over phone. The remaining five then entered the shop.

Employees of the shop later informed that they were all handcuffed by the robbers at gunpoint. The miscreants also snatched mobile phones from two customers. The security guards tried to intervene, but were easily overpowered by the robbers. They beat up the security personnel and also tied them up.

As per information available from the staff, the robbers took away gold and diamond ornaments worth 17 kilograms. However, they did not touch any silver jewellery. Employees estimated that the total amount of ornaments were worth Rs 12 crore approximately. After completing the heist, the miscreants left the shop on two wheelers.

Official sources said some female employees who were injured in the attack have been hospitalised. On being informed, police reached the shop and started investigations. They are also examining the CCTV footage of the shop in a bid to identify the miscreants.
