Jeypore: In another case of neglecting girl child, a newborn baby girl was abandoned by her mother. Locals found the baby shivering and crying in the bitter wintry night at the Nuasahi Park lane here Tuesday midnight. Fortunately she was rescued before she was affected by the severe cold and before stray dogs could harm her.
Sources said, a woman fearing social stigma after giving birth to a daughter left the newborn on the verandah of a villager in the Nuasahi locality here. At about 1 a.m., the family members woke up as the baby started wailing. They opened the door to find the shivering baby surrounded by dogs. Mehendi Hassan, one of the family members, took the baby to the district headquarters hospital here. The doctors admitted the baby and started the treatment at the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNUC).
District child protection officer, Rajashree Das visited the hospital Wednesday and enquired with the doctors about the condition of the baby.
“After two days at SNUC, the baby will be produced at Child Welfare Committee (CWC). Then the baby will then be admitted at Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital in Koraput. The administration will adopt the baby in the event of none turning up to claim her,” informed Das and added that the baby will be left at the care of any Child Care Home as directed by the CWC.
Mehendi, on the other hand, had gone to the Sadar police station to lodge a complaint but she was asked to go to Jeypore town police station as the incident had occurred under its jurisdiction.
