He has been titled ‘Captain Cool’ and ‘Mr Cool’ for his impeccable behaviour on the cricket field. So everyone was shocked and stunned when they saw Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni rush out to the ground and confront umpire Ullas Gandhe after the official had failed to notice a ‘no-ball’during his team’s match against Rajasthan Royals (RR) at Jaipur. Dhoni’s angry exchange with the umpire surprised all because he has always kept his emotions check on the cricket field. He later on was fined 50% of his match feels
But then is Dhoni as ‘cool’ as he projects? Well looking back at the last few years, the usually quiet man has lost his cool on a number of occasions. May be age is catching up with his ‘cool’ demeanour. Here are some incidents when Dhoni has lost his cool.
January 2019: India were playing Australia in an ODI at Adelaide and Dhoni wanted a water break while batting. Reserve player Khalil Ahmed while bringing the water container stepped on to the pitch. The stump mike caught Dhoni snapping at Ahmed and telling him to get off the pitch.
April 2018: This time however, Dhoni was not irked with the officials conducting the CSK-RR game. He got angry on the bowlers and literally barked at all of them constantly. One had never seen MSD expressing his displeasure in such an extensive manner, before.
September 2018: During the Asia Cup match against Afghanistan spinner Kuldeep Yadav was constantly nagging at Dhoni to change the field placements. A few deliveries later, Dhoni was heard shouting back with anger, “Bowl with the field given, or I will just remove you from the attack.”
May 2015: It was an ODI between India and Bangladesh. Left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman accidentally stepped in batsman Dhoni’s way as he was attempting a cheeky single. He was then seen gesticulating angrily at Mustafizur and there was a heated exchange between the two. Another incident of ‘cool’ not being cool anymore.
January 2012: Dhoni had stumped Mike Hussey off the bowling of Suresh Raina. The third umpire had also adjudged the batsman to be out and Hussey was leaving the field. It was then umpire Billy Bowden recalled Hussey back to the ground. An excited Dhoni was seen arguing heatedly with Bowden. The umpire later said he had recalled the batsman because the TV umpire had asked him to.
