ACTION PLAN

Cuttack: Traffic problem in the Millennium City is likely to ease soon as the authorities are planning multi-storey parking lots and widening of roads, especially at points where traffic is choked during peak hours.

The Cuttack Development Authority (CDA), Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) and the Commissionerate Police have jointly formulated an action plan to ease traffic congestion.

Multi-storey parking lots will come up at Buxi Bazaar and High Court Square here.

“The CMC had shortlisted 24 locations to build parking lots. Around 14 spots have been leased out, but squatters have encroached on the remaining ones. The locations will be cleared of encroachments,” Collector Aravind Agrawal said while chairing a high-level meeting at his residence to brainstorm ways to ease traffic problems.

“Some more parking lots will also be built in the city. A four-member committee has been formed comprising Sadar tehsildar, secretaries of CDA and CMC, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Traffic,” Agrawal said.

The fish markets at Khannagar and Naya Bazaar would be relocated. “Khannagar fish market will be shifted to Krushak Bazaar, while the Naya Bazaar one will have a new home on nearby government land,” the Collector said.

The road connecting Hotel Blue Lagoon, CMC office and SGBL Mall will be widened to four-lane. The vending zone around SCB Medical College and Hospital will be removed and if required the road around SCB will also be made four-lane. The road between Satichoura and Biju Patnaik Square will also be widened.

Garbage would be collected in the wee hours to ensure that trash ferrying vehicles don’t add to traffic problems.

“Footpaths will be cleaned regularly. In case footpaths are found untidy the concerned sanitary inspector and official in charge of the area will face the music,” the Collector added.

Senior officials of CMC, CDA, Traffic and the Works department attended the meeting.
