With 351 players, including some big names in world cricket – both Indian and foreigners – went under the hammer at the 2019 IPL auction Tuesday, only one name that grabbed most of the headlines – Varun Chakravarthy.
The unheralded mystery spinner Varun fetched a sensational bid of Rs 8.4 crore, more than 40 times his base price (Rs 20 lakh).
The auction almost turned sour for out of favour Indian batsman Yuvraj Singh when he went unsold in the initial bidding. But Mumbai Indians gave him a reason to cheer for when the three-time champions bought the 36-year-old veteran in his base price of Rs 1 crore.
Left-arm pacer Jaydev Unadkat was the joint costliest player with Varun as Rajasthan Royals successfully regained his services.
In another surprise pick, Mumbai all-rounder Shivam Dubey was one of the top five costliest players as Royal Challengers Bangalore bought him for Rs 5 crore. It was quite a hefty amount for an uncapped player whose base price was Rs 20 lakh.
England all-rounder Sam Curran was the costliest foreign player as Kings XI Punjab paid Rs 7.20 crores for his services. Out of favour South African player Colin Ingram became the second costliest player from abroad after Delhi Capitals won the bid with Rs 6.40 crore. There were three West Indies players in the top five costliest foreign players – Carlos Brathwaite (Rs 5 crore) to Kolkata Knight Riders, Shimron Hetmyer (Rs 4.20 crore) to Royal Challengers Bangalore and Nicolas Pooran (Rs 4.20 crore) to Kings XI Punjab.
