Mystery surrounds death of Hyderabad woman in US, parents allege torture
Hyderabad: A 38-year-old woman from Hyderabad was found dead Sunday under suspicious circumstances at her home in US state of North Carolina, the city police informed reporters here Monday. The deceased has been identified as Gajam Vanitha. The police here also said that the cops in North Carolina have taken Vanitha’s husband Rachakonda Shiva Kumar, a 42-year-old software engineer, into custody for questioning.
Vanitha’s father Gajam Krishnaiah filed a complaint with the police Monday morning after getting the news of his daughter’s sudden demise in the United States. He alleged torture and harassment by her husband and in-laws. Krishnaiah has told the police here that Vanitha may have been forced to commit suicide.
“We are awaiting further details. The family requested our help to bring the body of Vanitha from the US,” LB Nagar police inspector V Ashok Reddy said.
Vanitha, the mother of two children had been living with her parents at Sai Nagar of Hyderabad’s Nagole area for quite some time. Police said that Vanitha had left for the US in July this year. After that she had not contacted her parents a single time. However, Sunday evening, Vanitha’s father got a call from the US stating that she had committed suicide in her room, police said.
When contacted, Krishnaiah said Vanitha had disputes in her family. But he refused to divulge more details, saying his first priority was to bring his daughter’s body to India. “We will be able to tell exactly what led to her death only after we bring the body back to Hyderabad here,” Krishnaiah said.
