Jharsuguda: Odisha Health Minister and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Naba Kishore Das was consigned to flames at Kherual this district Monday. Bishal Das, son of the deceased leader, lit the funeral pyre to complete the last rites.
Earlier Monday thousands of people paid a tearful homage to Naba Das, who was gunned down by a police officer the day before, as his mortal remains reached here from Bhubaneswar.
Many shops, business establishments and educational institutions in the district remained closed during the day, with locals pouring out on the streets to shower flowers on the hearse carrying the departed leader’s remains, which drove through the streets of Jharsuguda town on its way to his home.
After his body was flown to Jharsuguda town, Das’ body was taken to Manmohan school field in a procession and finally to Kherual where he was consigned to flames with full State honours.

Das died at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar on Sunday, hours after he was shot by an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) at Brajarajnagar, where he had gone to attend an event.
Slogans such as ‘Naba Das amar rahe’ (Naba Das to remain immortal) filled the air, with several supporters of the leader seeking death sentence of the accused.
A formal guard of honour was accorded to Naba Das at his official residence in Bhubaneswar, following which his mortal remains were flown to his hometown.
Following Das’ death on Sunday night at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar, his body was taken in a procession to the Odisha Assembly where many party leaders paid their last respects to the Odisha leader.
