Nabarangpur: With demand for earthen lamps decreasing, more than 90 potter families living in Khatiguda village under Tentulikhunti block of Nabarangpur district have sought different occupations for their livelihood, a source said Monday.

The source informed that locally manufactured earthen lamps have been ousted from the market by Chinese products such as electric lights, garlands and other items. The potters are finding it difficult to sustain the occupation as clay items are on the verge of extinction.

However, as Diwali nears, almost everyone from the 90 potter families in the village is taking part in manufacturing ‘diyas’ (clay lamps). This year, the potter families are hopeful for a profitable business during the festival of lights.

The source added that the cottage industry has been kept alive as earthen lamps are mostly utilised in important Hindu rituals. However, the potters do not get a fair price for their products.

The potters have appealed to buy earthen lamps instead of Chinese-made lights this Diwali.

Locals suggested that the administration needs to take steps for the development of potters.
