Bhubaneswar: Orissa was changed to Odisha for convenience in pronunciation of some IAS officers in the state, OrissaPOST and Dharitri Editor Tathagata Satpathy said Sunday.

“Before 2013 and after 2013 the spelling of ‘Odisha’ in Odia language is the same. We have not changed that. But we have changed it from Orissa to Odisha in English for convenience in pronunciation of some IAS officers governing the state,” said Satpathy while addressing meritorious students during a function organised by Pandav Jena foundation at Jatni in Khurda district.

Satpathy also expressed concern over the decline in quality of education in Odisha. He said that the quality of primary and secondary education in the state has been declining rapidly.

Satpathy pointed out several reasons behind it. He said that the lack of teachers is one of the reasons. Besides, some teachers lack required qualifications and patience, he informed while adding that lack of encouragement from the government is another key factor affecting quality of education in the state.
