Nandankanan welcomes two guests

Barang: Following a series of animal deaths at Nandankanan Zoological Park (NZP) here, the zoo welcomed two new guests—a marmoset and a sangai.

According to zoo sources, a marmoset was born at enclosure 56 Wednesday. With this, the number of marmosets at Nandankanan has reached four including two females, a male and another whose gender is yet to be ascertained.

On the other hand, a sangai, an endangered subspecies of brow-antlered deer found only in Manipur, was born at enclosure 36 of NZP Tuesday. With this, the species at NZP went up to 11 including five females, four males and the gender of remaining two are yet to be ascertained, said a zoo source.

Notably, the deaths of animals, especially four elephants within a span of one month owing to Herpes virus had sent shockwaves among the animal enthusiasts. The arrival of new inmates has come as a respite not only to the animal lovers but also to the zoo authorities.
