Nayagarh: Friend stoned to death; man surrenders

Nuagaon: Two days after a youth was stoned to death at Badadhodha Trinath Mandap under Nuagaon police limits in Nayagarh district, the main accused surrendered himself before the cops Wednesday.

He has been identified as Babula alias Pabana (25) of the same village. The deceased was identified as Jitu, 35, son of Linga Nahak, of Matha Sahi in Korada. Babula was taken for further investigation after he surrendered, police said.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Jitu worked as a daily labourer and lived in his father-in-law’s house with his wife Tulasi, a son and a daughter at Khalmada. He had been to Nuagaon on his bike along with fellow villagers Ganga Sethy, Rakesh Korada and Pabana Pradhan at their request for a drink session.

Things took an ugly turn after they broke out into a fight after they run out of liquor. Fed up with Jitu’s behavior, Ganga and Rakesh left for the village.

Meanwhile, Jitu and Pabana continued their fight. Losing his temper, irate Pabana took a stone and hit Jitu, killing him on the spot.

He then fled the area. Jitu’s wife grew apprehensive after nightfall and attempted contacting him over phone, but it remained switched off.

Tuesday morning Jitu’s body was spotted at the mandap and the local residents informed Nuagaon police. IIC Manorama Mallick reached the spot and intimated the deceased’s family.

Based on Tulasi’s statement, the police detained Pabana’s father following which the latter surrendered, police said. Jitu’s bike was found lying near the veterinary hospital and has been seized.
