Nayagarh town residents suffer without ‘smart crematorium’

Nayagarh: The lack of a ‘smart crematorium’ in this town is causing huge problems to the residents. They are having a tough time cremating their near and dear ones.

The town has two cremation grounds – one at Bhalukhol in Old Town area and the other near a residential area behind Krushak Bazaar on Khandapara road. However, both have remained unused for a lengthy period now. This problem has existed for more than 15 years with no steps being taken by the district administration to solve the issue.

Residents here said that entrance to the cremation ground at Old Town area has become a garbage dumping spot. The smell from the garbage is so nauseating that they cannot go near the dump. The other one behind Krushak Bazaar has residential colonies all around it. Some have encroached upon cremation ground. Last year an eviction drive was launched, however, the ground still cannot be used for cremation.

“We are not able to accord dignity to our departed loved ones. Some of us who can afford go to Swargadwar in Puri for performing the last rites of our relatives do so. However, most have to perform the last rites at their own backyards,” a resident said on condition of anonymity.

When contacted, executive officer, Nayagarh Municipality, Santosh Kumar Jena said he is aware of the difficulties due to the lack of a smart crematorium.

“The problem will end soon as a smart crematorium is being built at the Old Town cremation ground at a cost of Rs 1.50 crore. It is spread across 1.5 acres. Four families can be accommodated simultaneously at the crematorium. Soon a tender will be floated for construction. Once the builder is finalised work will start,” said Jena.
