Bhubaneswar: The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) will soon carry out joint exercises before monsoons in order to tackle natural calamities better. The decision was taken after an informal meeting Saturday between the Director General of Police RP Sharma and the newly-appointed Director General (DG) of NDRF and IPS officer, Satya Narayan Pradhan. He said the joint operation will help both the forces in dealing with man-made as well as natural disasters.
Speaking to the media, Pradhan said that the ODRAF has expertise in tackling floods and cyclones (aquatic disasters) while the NDRF are the first medical responders during the disasters caused by chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear events. He also said that if both the forces combine their strengths then it will help in handling disasters in a more efficient manner.
However, the date for the joint exercises is yet to be finalized by the forces. Meanwhile, some sources claimed that most probably it will be held in March. Though the dates of the joint exercise are yet to be finalised, senior officials said that mock drills are likely to be conducted in March.
Pradhan said that the fire services department, NDRF and ODRAF should work together during the times of emergency.
