Jakarta: As expected, javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra added to India’s gold tally and in the process he bettered his national record. Neeraj incidentally became the first Indian javelin thrower to win the gold in an Asian Games.
Overall it was a satisfactory day for India in track and field with the country winning one gold and three silver medals. India’s current gold tally now stands at eight and they have the chance to go past the figure of 12 attained at the last edition of the event.
In badminton, Saina Nehwal finished with the bronze, while PV Sindhu assured herself of silver by becoming the first Indian to enter the finals of an individual event in badminton.
Boxers also continued their dominance with three of the four boxers winning their bouts and sealing quarterfinal spots. The eves’ hockey team also maintained its winning spree with thrashing Thailand 5-0 to finish their group engagements with an all-win record. The highlight of the match was skipper Rani Rampal’s hat-trick.
The squash players also made a winning start in the team events. The men beat Indonesia 3-0 in the morning before overwhelming Singapore by the same margin. The women’s team, who had only one match, defeated Iran 3-0.
However, it was a bad day for Indian cyclists as they crashed out of the preliminary team events.
