We love freezers because they preserve our precious food for days, weeks, and sometimes even months. Some tasty treats, like ice cream, are tailor-made for an ice box, but other food and drinks should definitely never come close to entering your freezer. Whether it’s an accident or not, freezing these things could cause you to have to clean your freezer, or worse, put you at risk for illness.
Here are the foods and drinks you should never place in your freezer.
Champagne: Never, ever freeze champagne; just don’t do it. The carbonation in the liquid could lead to the bottle exploding in the freezer. The correct alternative is to chill some bubbly in an ice bucket that contains a healthy mix of ice and water.
Beer: Beer is another alcoholic beverage that should be kept out of the freezer. In a can, frozen beer can warp the can and make it nearly impossible to drink, while bottled beer could break in the freezer. If a frozen beer’s seal is still in tact, try defrosting it in the fridge.
Eggs In a Shell: Storing eggs in the freezer is a big no-no. When eggs are frozen, their water content expands, and with expansion comes harmful bacteria and a cracked shell.
Fried Foods: Home-prepared fried foods, such as french fries and crispy chicken tenders, turn to absolute mush once they are frozen.
Yogurt: No, this isn’t the same thing as frozen yogurt. Freezing fresh yogurt will change its consistency to something similar to cottage cheese. It can also curdle when it’s defrosting.
Milk: Some people might think it’s OK to freeze milk to preserve it before the expiration date — don’t do that. Milk expands when frozen, and after defrosting it starts to curdle.
Salad Greens: Since salad contains a lot of water, freezing the greens will give it a slimy texture. Gross!
Even Fruits, breads, pickles should never be kept inside a freezer.
