New Delhi-Bhubaneswar Rajdhani express catches fire, passengers safe

Bahanaga: Passengers aboard New Delhi-Bhubaneswar Rajdhani express had a narrow escape as the train caught fire Saturday afternoon near Khantapada Station in Balasore district.

No casualties have been reported from the mishap, it was learnt.

Exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained though many speculate it to have been caused of an electrical short-circuit. All overhead electric switches have been switched off in the train following the incident.

According to sources, thick smoke was noticed coming out from generator car of the train at about 12.50 pm. The alert railway staff immediately detached the car from the train effectively stopping the fire to spread to other compartments.

Fire fighters reached the spot after being notified and brought the fire under control.

The train left Khantapada for Bhubaneswar at 2:59pm with all the passenger coaches and one generator car, following a thorough inspection by a team from Kharagpur division.
