New DGP advises cops to shun ruler mentality, adopt technology

Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s new Director General of Police (DGP) Bijay Kumar Sharma Thursday asked police personnel to shun ruler mentality and adopt technology to win the confidence of people.

The police have to act according to local culture and sentiments, Sharma told reporters here after taking charge as the 32nd Director General of Police. “We cannot win the confidence of Odia people with a British mindset and a ruler mentality,” the DGP said.

Sharma, who had worked in the Crime Branch of Odisha Police and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), said “We have to improve our investigation wing and ensure a better conviction rate in the state.”

The Odisha Police will adopt and apply technology for detection, investigation and prevention of crime, he said. From constables to senior officers, all must adopt technology and become accessible to people.

The new DGP said, “Senior officers should be accessible to people so that personnel in the lower ranks are not able to put people in trouble.” Mentioning that police stations are the ’soul’ of the police system, he said, ‘People must get proper treatment and not harassed at police stations.’ On corruption in the police system, Sharma said that once senior officers become accessible to the people, corruption will automatically come down.

BK Sharma succeeded his batchmate RP Sharma, who has been named as a non-judicial member of the Lokayukta.
