New Delhi: Records and milestones seem to go in hand in hand for former Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The ongoing ODI series against Australia gives Dhoni the chance to reach the 17,000-run mark in all the three formats (Tests, ODIs, T20s) of the game. He needs another 92 runs to become the sixth Indian batsman to achieve such a feat.
Keeping in mind, Dhoni’s form in 2019, it is expected that the wicket-keeper batsman will easily achieve the feat. Dhoni did not have a very good 2018, but this year has been quite different. He got three half centuries on the trot when India defeated Australia 2-1 in the ODI series played prior to the one which started Saturday.
So far five Indian batsmen have managed to score over 17,000 runs combining all the three formats. Sachin Tendulkar (34,357) heads the list. He is followed by Rahul Dravid (24,208), Virat Kohli (19,409), Sourav Ganguly (18,575) and Virender Sehwag (17,253). If Dhoni manages to get the 92 runs in the five ODIs against Australia he certainly will be in an elite group of Indian players.
Dhoni has so far scored 4,876 runs in Tests, 10,415 in ODIs and 1,617 in T20 Internationals. He has been working very hard on his batting and that is for everyone to see. In fact Dhoni is the first Indian wicket-keeper to have scored more than 10,000 runs in ODIs. If things go according to plan, then certainly another milestone is on the anvil for ‘Mr Cool’
