Newborn boy rescued from restroom

Dhenkanal: In a heartrending incident, a newborn boy was rescued from a passenger restroom at Teramaili square in Joranda police limits area of Dhenkanal district in the wee hours Wednesday.

Locals said, the baby survived in the dark, throughout Tuesday night in the restroom after it was left by its parents/mother. It is suspected to be the work of some unwed woman. While locals sympathised on the baby, they expressed outrage on the person who had left the baby and demanded stringent action against them.

Sources said, the matter came to the fore after locals first spotted the baby lying in a restroom at around 5.30 am Wednesday morning. Some youths soon ran to its rescue and handed him over to an Anganwadi worker.

Later, a team of Child Line officials reached the spot and admitted the baby to a Primary Health Centre (PHC) at Natima for a medical examination. The health condition of the baby is stated to be stable now. Meanwhile, police have begun an inquiry to find out why and who abandoned the baby in the place.

“The baby will be produced before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) that will pass an order for rehabilitation of the newborn. Most probably, he will be kept at a Specialized Adoption Agency (SAA),” said Mandakini Rout, a child Line official.
