Bargarh, August 5: Tension prevailed at the district headquarters hospital here Wednesday after a newborn died allegedly due to negligence in treatment.
Chief district medical officer (DCMO) Prakash Pradhan reached the hospital and held a discussion with the angry family members and relatives. The protesters relented after the CDMO assured an investigation into the matter and action against those found guilty.
After leaving the hospital, the parents as well as relatives of the newborn lodged a complaint at Town police station.

According to sources, Madina Begum, wife of Mohammad Siddique, of Bijepur in the district complained of labour pain late Tuesday night. She was admitted to the district headquarters hospital around 12.30 am.
She was taken to the labour room. But, as there was no gynaecologist in the hospital, nurses and para-medical staff attended to the woman who delivered a baby boy around 6 am. After a while, the condition of the newborn suddenly deteriorated.

The newborn was taken to the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) of the hospital. Though a doctor from the emergency ward attended to the child, he was declared dead later.
Following the incident, tension erupted at the hospital with the family members alleging absence of a gynaecologist as well as negligence in treatment as the reasons behind his death.

“When my wife was admitted to the hospital, there was no doctor in the obstetrics and gynaecology department. Though there was a doctor in the emergency ward, the doctor did not turn up despite repeated requests. Rather, the doctor came very late and declared the child dead,” alleged Siddique.
