Angul: An abandoned newborn girl child was rescued from Ragudipadia village under Bantala police limits in Angul district Thursday.
According to a source, a local woman identified as Shanti Naik from Ragadipadia village had gone to a nearby nullah to dispose off household waste where she heard the cries of a baby.
Following the direction where the crying sound was coming from, she reached a bush and found the newborn girl wrapped in clothes. She rescued the child and took it to her house.
At the time of filing this report, neither the police nor Childline officials had reached the village to provide any assistance or medical care to the newborn. Meanwhile, Shanti has since been providing maternal care to her.
While some of the locals are of the opinion that the child was abandoned because of her gender, others suggested it to be a case of an unwed mother abandoning her child owing to social stigma.
