Newborn goes missing from Dhenkanal DHH

Dhenkanal: The family members of a newborn baby filed a complaint with the police, alleging that the baby went missing after its birth at Dhenkanal district hospital.

The hospital authorities however claimed that the baby fell ill soon after its birth and died.

According to reports, Sujata, wife of Sonuj Dehury of Manipur village near Sadar, was admitted to the DHH December 25. She delivered a baby boy on the same day. But when the condition of the baby deteriorated, he was shifted to the newborn intensive care unit December 27.

When Sonuj and his wife wanted to see their son December 28, the staff said the newborn died, it was alleged.

This led to an argument between the parents the hospital staff. The staff said they had intimated the mother about her baby’s death earlier itself.

They claimed that the mother put her thumb impression on the papers, declaring that she was aware about the death.

As per rules, if a newborn baby dies, the authorities will have to hand over the body to its parents. But in this case, the authorities did not hand over the body.

After being harassed from all quarters, the parents took the matter to the chief district medical officer (CDMO) and registered a complaint with the town police.

When contacted, inspector in charge (IIC) Abhinab Dalua said, “The brother of the woman has lodged a complaint. Acting on his compliant, we have quizzed the hospital staff. Our investigation is on.”

CDMO Dr Pratap Kumar Behera said the complaint was made Friday afternoon. “I can say something about it only after receiving the enquiry report,” he said.
