NHRC asks Odisha, TN DGPs to probe plaint on missing girl

Karlamunda: The NHRC has asked the DGPs of Odisha and Tamil Nadu to order a probe into missing bonded labourer Rashmita, and to submit a report within four weeks.

Rashmita, 19, daughter of Gopinath Suna of Banjipadar in Gochadengan panchayat under M. Rampur block in Kalahandi district, had gone to Tamil Nadu to work as a labourer, but went missing there.

She was taken to Tamil Nadu by Yudhistir Bibhar. She was among five girls Bibhar took to the southern state promising good wages. Her family had sought the help of the police and the administration to bring her back safely.

A Bhawanipatna-based rights activist, Dillip Kumar Das, had filed a petition June 2, 2018 with the NHRC alleging kidnapping or killing of the migrant labourer, non-registration of case and inaction by the authorities.

Based on this, a case (2436/22/0/2018) was registered by the commission.

Poor women and youths from the tribal pockets of Odisha are lured by labour brokers to Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala with promises of high wages. A large number of youths from Kalahandi district are working in other states.

The migrant labourers are very often subjected to inhuman torture and long hours of work by their employers.
