New Delhi: The state government Thursday submitted in the Supreme Court that the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has not placed any report or fact in respect to the communal riots occurred in Kandhamal district of the state in 2007.
A two-judge bench of the apex court comprising Justice UU Lalit and Justice Indu Malhotra heard the petition filed by Archbishop John Baruwa seeking additional compensation to the victims of the riots that occurred in Kandhamal district in 2007.
The bench adjourned the matter for hearing July 2 following the time sought by the counsel, appearing for the petitioner, to make their arguments in the matter.
During the hearing, the counsel for state government Shibashish Misra submitted in the court that the NHRC has not dealt with the 2007 riots. It has given report only in the 2008 riots that occurred in the district.
It is to be mentioned here that the apex court, March 5, had asked the state government and the petitioner to enquire whether the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) submitted any report in respect to the 2007 riots in Kandhamal district.
Meanwhile, the counsel for petitioner Anupradha Singh told Orissa POST that the bench had also asked whether the state government agencies have conducted any enquiry regarding the victims of 2007 riots but the state government has not given its response yet.
