Cuttack, Dec 8: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Monday sought a detailed report from health secretary on death of a one and half year old kid due to alleged medical negligence at Nayagarh district headquarters hospital November 5 this year.
The rights panel directed the secretary to submit its report within four weeks explaining the reason behind the child’s death. The commission’s order came in response to a petition filed by rights activist Jayant Kumar Das in this regard.
The petitioner claimed that son of Ashok Sahu, a resident of Nayagarh block, was admitted to Nayagarh district headquarters hospital November 3 after he fell ill due to diarrhoea. When his condition worsened November 5, doctors advised a nurse to administer saline to the boy. The nurse gave water to the kid after administering saline. The patient died after dranking water. The kid’s death had sparked tension in the locality with his relatives blaming doctors for death of the child.
Holding the hospital authorities responsible for death of the child, the petitioner had urged the commission to direct the state government to pay `10 lakh as compensation to the victim’s kin and take action against the nurse.
