RAPE & MURDER OF MINOR

NHRC summons Keonjhar, Bhadrak SPs

Bhubaneswar: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued conditional summons directing the Superintendents of Police of Bhadrak and Keonjhar districts to personally appear before it in connection with the kidnapping and murder of a minor girl at Anandpur in Keonjhar in 2020.

The Commission issued the summons as the police officials failed to submit any report on the issue despite repeated reminders from the NHRC.

The SPs have been asked to be present before the Commission in person October 4, 2021.

“However, in case the requisite report is submitted on or before 27.09.2021 their personal appearance shall be dispensed with,” added the NHRC.

According to sources, the 17-year-old victim, a native of Bhadrak district, was staying with her uncle and studying in Plus II at a college in Anandpur. The victim later came into contact with one Swarna Ranjan, who allegedly kidnapped her 14, October, 2020. Later, Ranjan kept her at a rented house near Keonhjar town.

The landlady, Manorama Patnaik and Ranjan reportedly forced the minor girl to engage in flesh trade. So, they allegedly killed the victim in November 2020.

Later, they cut her body into pieces and packed the dismembered body in a gunny bag. However, some villagers spotted the accused while trying to dispose of her body. Police recovered the body and later arrested both Patnaik and Ranjan.

However, the deceased minor’s father alleged that police inaction was the major reason behind his daughter’s death. He claimed that police did not take any action on the missing report filed by him just three days after her disappearance October 17, 2020.
