Sambalpur: Following incessant rains that battered the state over the past few days, nine of the sluice gates of Hirakud dam in the district were opened Sunday afternoon, official sources informed.

According to reports, there has been heavy rainfall in the upstream part of the dam. As a result, Hirakud Dam’s reservoir is in a precarious flood-like situation. Till 9pm Saturday night, water level had escalated to 615.02 feet.
Similarly, nearly 1,69,565 cusecs of rainwater has been entering into the reservoir every second according to reports. As against this, 1,00,309 cusecs of rainwater per second is being released through sluice gates, power channel and other different canals, official sources asserted.
