Bhubaneswar: An Odisha flavour was distinctly evident as Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Budget for the 2022-23 Tuesday. Nirmala Sitharaman is well-known for her love of handloom sarees and her fascination for colours. She has been spotted wearing such sarees on a number of important occasions.
Sitharaman presented her fourth successive Budget in the Parliament wearing a Bomkai saree which is made in Sonepur district of Odisha
Sitharam paired her brown and red saree with a white shawl and white face mask. These gave her a simple and elegant look. She accessorised the saree with a red bindi and tiny gold earrings along with a golden chain and bangles.
‘Bomkai’ silk is also known as Sonepuri silk. It is one of Odisha’s oldest varieties of sareei. The original and traditional weaving of this fabric is done in a low-count cotton yarn that which is coarse, heavy, and dyed in vibrant colours. To put it simply, it is an extra weft technique on a pit loom.
Sitharam wore a bright red and off-white Pochampalli silk saree with a matching red blouse when she presented the budget last year. She completed the look with a gold chain, bangles, and tiny earrings.
In view of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Finance Minister opted for documents in a tablet wrapped in a red-coloured cover with the Emblem of the Government of India, instead of the traditional ‘bahi khata’.
