No electricity at home, but beneficiaries get bills

Naugaon: The Central government provides electricity to the BPL families under the Soubhagya scheme. But the scheme has not been effectively implemented in Naugaon block in Jagatsingpur district.

In some cases, the beneficiaries have no electricity, but they are receiving electricity bills regularly. In some other cases, contractors demand bribe to carry out electrification work at their houses. Those who are unable to pay bribe, the contractors stop electricity connection work and take away electricity accessories.

Bideshi Mohanty, a daily labourer in this block, had submitted an application in panchyat office for availing electricity facility through the Soubhagya scheme. In second week of January, the appointed contractor set all the accessories in Bideshi’s house for electricity connection work. After that contractor demanded bribe for further work. As Bideshi refused to oblige the contractor, the latter stopped work and took away all electric accessories including electric meter and board.

When the SDO of CESU Chhitadutta Uppadhya was informed about the incident he said that none can an eligible person of the benefits of the Soubhagya. He assured that necessary steps would be initiated against the unscrupulous contractor.
