No hearse, man carries wife’s body on trolley

Birmaharajpur: With no hearse to carry his wife’s body following her death in Subarnapur district headquarters hospital (DHH), a man was forced to carry her body on a trolley to the cremation ground for final rites.

He then performed the last rites all alone, it was learnt. The deceased was identified as 65-year-old Sumitra Mohapatra, wife of Achyut Mohapatra, a native of Kumarkeli village under Sadar police limits.

According to reports, Achyut and his family resided in a thatched house near Birmaharajpur Government College for the last couple of years.  The family earned a livelihood by doing odd jobs.

Achyut made both ends meet by pulling a trolley. Achyut admitted his wife Sumitra to Sonepur District Hospital October 4 after she was affected of fever.

However, there was no improvement in her health condition and she finally breathed her last Saturday 8AM. The medical authorities then conducted the post-mortem of the body and handed it over to Achyut.

Though the family members tried their best to avail a hearse vehicle, their attempts failed.

Since they didn’t have money to hire a vehicle to carry the body up to the cremation ground, Achyut loaded the body on his trolley and pulled it to the cremation ground near the college road.

The incident attracted huge crowd as Achyut pulled the body through the town to the cremation ground. It has spread outrage among the locals who condemned the negligence of the medical authorities in providing a hearse to carry the body.

When contacted, the medical authorities claimed of being unaware of the incident.
