Baripada: Even as student unrest gripped MPC Autonomous College at Takatpur in Baripada town of Mayurbhanj district, the college authorities cancelled the polls Thursday amid allegations that a girl student was misbehaved with. The college was tense when two groups of students were at loggerheads over holding the college union elections.
Keeping in view the pre-poll violence, a group sought cancellation of the college union elections while the other was adamant on holding the polls.
A student allegedly misbehaved with a girl student. She and her supporters sat in a dharna in front of the Principal’s office. The girl lodged a complaint with Principal Bishnu Charan Jena in this regard. The agitating students sought rustication of the accused student.
The college campus was already tense since Wednesday night after some unknown people had burst crackers near women’s hostels. All hostel inmates had sleepless night Wednesday.
The college authorities were to publish the final list of nominated candidates after withdrawal of nominations Thursday.
At 1 pm, the Commerce Block of the college was rocked with ear-shattering explosions of 10 crackers despite security measures by the college authorities and police.
“As per recommendations of the Lingdow Commission, the students’ union polls were cancelled due to pre-poll violence in the campus. Students were tense on the incident,” explained the Principal. He added that the internal committee of the college will look into the complaint made by the girl student.
