Bhawanipatna: A woman gave birth to a baby boy mid-way while she was being carried on a cot to board ‘Janani Express’ ambulance as the vehicle could not come to her doorsteps due to absence of road in Nalachuan village under Dhansuli panchayat under Jaipatna block in Kalahandi district, a source said Tuesday.
The woman — identified as Sukri Jani — was going through labour and one of her relatives called the Janani Express ambulance service. However, due to the lack of an all-weather road to the village, the vehicle had to stop near Bangtisada village – about five kilometres away from her house.
With no better option left, Shukri was carried on a cot and mid-way she gave birth to the baby boy.

On being informed, officials and staff from Dhansuli Primary Health Centre rushed to the spot and examined the health of the mother and her son. Later, a health department official advised Sukri’s family members to admit her to Jaipatna Community Health Centre for better medical care.
It can be mentioned here that Janani Express is an ambulance service that provides free transport to pregnant women for institutional delivery.
