Noble gesture: Parents donate eyes of Fani victims

Deceased Soumyakant Panda

Baripada, May 5: Hours after Soumyakant Panda and Khetra Mohan Behera died Friday their family members decided to donate the eyes of both to Mayurbhanj District Headquarters Hospital (DHH). Both were killed after a tree fell on them when the two were returning home from their shop on a bike as cyclone ‘Fani’ was raging through this locality.

Sudhir Kumar Panda, the father of Soumya and Menka Behera, the father of Khetra Mohan agreed to donate the eyes. In spite of the tragic loss they had suffered, they were kind enough to commit the noble act which certainly will help some visually-challenged people in the future.

“Within seconds Fani has left us orphaned. They were safe and sound in their shops. Little did we know that they would leave us forever on their way home. We would have asked them to stay back in the shops had we known” rued Soumya’s father, Sudhir.

“Since, they have gone we want them to live on in others. So we decided to donate their eyes so that others can see the beautiful world. We will live with the satisfaction that their eyes have given a new lease of life to others,” added Sudihir.

The medical authorities have already removed the eyes from the deceased and stored the eyes. The eyes will be provided for transplantation should someone needs it.
