Paradip: Darya Devi, a vessel from Hong Kong, that lay anchored in the harbour here, Friday night sustained extensive damage due to rain and thunderstorm triggered by a Nor’wester.
Following snapping of the cable tied to the berth, the rear portion of the ship’s engine rammed onto a berth of Essar company. This created a major dent up to top of the stair case of the ship and made the cabin in the engine side tilted.
Similarly, Darya Devi’s frontage also hit another vessel anchored at Iffco’s berth.
Due to darkness, the exact quantum of loss was not assessed till filing of this report.
The ship’s collision with the berth resulted in an earthquake like situation, workers engaged in the berth said.
Meanwhile, the port officials reached the spot and took stock of the situation.
On the other hand, the roofs of several kutcha houses in slum areas were blown away by the gusty surface wind while many trees were found uprooted.
Communication was disrupted at several places due to falling of trees and snapping of electricity cables.
The Nor’wester hit the port town at about 9 pm, a report said.
