Bhanjanagar: After a hot chase, Bhanjanagar police Tuesday arrested notorious criminal Babu Naik who had escaped from local sub-jail.

The chase continued for almost an hour and Babu was finally caught after he fell off his vehicle. Meanwhile, three persons including Babu, his aide and a pedestrian, were injured after Babu’s vehicle hit them.

Later, the three were rescued with critical injuries and admitted to Bhanjanagar sub-divisional hospital. After first-aid, they were shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur for further treatment.

Police seized two pistols, a motorbike, two live bombs and other sharp-edged weapons from the possession of Babu and his aide.

According to sources, Babu was wanted by police for quite some time in several cases and was serving as an under-trial prisoner in the sub-jail after his arrest. However, with the help of his aide, Babu fled the sub-jail September 11 and was on the run since then.

A special team was formed to keep track of Babu’s movements. Later, on a tip-off that Babu was hiding in Baliadaha area under Jagannathprasad police limits, police tried to trap him.

Acting on the tip-off, a police team led by Bhanjanagar SDPO Utkal Keshari Das set off to arrest Babu.

Sensing the movement of police, Babu with his aide was speeding away on a motorbike when he hit a speed-hump and fell off the vehicle. Meanwhile, a vegetable vendor Prasant was also injured in the accident.

“Their condition is stable after treatment. Babu and his aide will be produced in court once there is improvement in their health,” SDPO Das said.
