Buguda: Acting on a tip-off, Buguda police arrested a notorious criminal, Benudhar Barik alias Benu, following an encounter at Ramapada forest under Buguda police limits in Ganjam district Tuesday.
Barik sustained bullet injury on his left leg and was admitted to Buguda community health centre (CHC). After preliminary treatment, he was shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur for further treatment.
According to police, Barik is a resident of Jamapatana village under Odagaon police limits in Nayagarh district. He has several cases pending against him name in various police stations in both Nayagarh and Ganjam district.
He was also involved in bank robberies at Manitara under Buguda police limits and Khurda. and has several cases pending against him at different police stations in Nayagarh, Ganjam and Khurda. Before his arrest, he had been in Khurda jail. Later he was out on parole and went absconding.
Since then, a police team was keeping a track on his whereabouts. Meanwhile, the police got a tip-off that Benu along with his associates was on his way to Ramapada village to commit some crime.
Later, a police team conducted raids and waylaid him at Ramapada forest. On seeing the cops, Benu opened fire at them and tried to flee. Retaliating back, the police opened fire after which a bullet struck in his left leg.
Police seized a country-made pistol, two live bullets and a motorbike from his possession. However, his accomplices managed to escape.
A case has been registered and a manhunt has been launched to nab his accomplices. He will produced in court after improvement in his health, a senior police official said.
