Notorious criminal hurt in encounter

Choudwar: A notorious criminal suffered grievous injuries in an exchange of fire with a joint team of special squad and Choudwar police here Monday.

Muna Dehury, a resident of Gundichapur in Dhenkanal, has suffered gunshot in his left leg following an encounter in the wee hours of Monday, said a police official, adding that Dehury is undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.

A pistol, two live bullets and a two-wheeler have been recovered from him, said the official.

Dehury has more than 11 criminal cases registered against him with different police stations across the state.

About the encounter, police said they were tipped off about Muna’s movement between Nuapatna and Choudwar following which the officials ambushed him near Bhuyanjor on Cuttack-Sambalpur Road around 5am.

“Upon spotting us, Muna tried to escape. We tried to waylay him, but he opened fire at us. We had to open fire at him in self-defence,” said an official, adding that Muna suffered gunshot in his left leg and fell off the bike.

Notably, Muna along with Ajay Sahoo, who had been arrested Sunday after a similar encounter, had opened fire and looted a family on the deserted stretch connecting Madhusudan Nagar and National Highway 55 September 24, 2019.
