Berhampur: Continuing the crackdown on criminals in Ganjam district, Berhampur Police Tuesday arrested a wanted criminal, Jitu Swain alias Badal, after an encounter near Dengapadar Square on the Hinjicut-Shergarh Road in Ganjam district late Monday evening.
Jitu suffered bullet injuries in his right leg and became unconscious while trying to escape. He is under treatment at the MKCG Medical College and Hospital here. Police seized a Mauser pistol, a mobile phone and a bike from him.
Police said Jitu had several cases of murder, attempt to murder, extortion and robbery against him. He is also charged with possessing illegal weapons under the Arms Act.
Jitu was wanted in 15 cases in Khurda, Bhubaneswar and Ganjam districts. A special team comprising Shergarh, Hinjili, Khallikote and Patrapur IICs was set up to track his movements. However, he always stayed in remote places and often gave cops the slip.
