Now lawyers, docs clash in Koraput over patient’s death

Koraput: Even as the spat between police and lawyers has come to an end, a new dispute between doctors and lawyers cropped up Friday in Jeypore over alleged medical negligence.

According to sources, a lawyer identified as Satyabrata Padhi had taken his six-month old daughter to the newly opened district headquarters hospital in Jeypore November 14.  After undergoing treatment for two days, the baby died Friday.

Family members alleged medical negligence and staged protests inside the hospital. This took an ugly turn after the lawyer broke into an argument with the in-attendance paediatrician Prashant Samal.

The two broke into a violent scuffle inside the hospital. Subsequently, Samal filed a complaint against Padhi at the local police station, sources added. However, protesting against the doctors, the Koraput District Bar Association filed a counter complaint, sources said.

Biresh Mohan Patnaik, president, Jeypore Bar Association said “In the interest of patients, we did not want to take the issue forward. However, after the irresponsible behaviour of the doctor and the police complaint, we decided to file a complaint against him.”

“I went to the District Medical Officer (DMO) and expressed my helplessness after being threatened by the lawyer. I submitted my complaint about being misbehaved on duty to the DMO and IIC,” Samal said.

Meanwhile, Jeypore police said action will be taken after investigation into the complaints filed by both sides. Kailash Chandra Sethi, IIC, Jeypore police station said “Two counter cases have been filed concerning the incident.”
