Bhubaneswar: After publication of the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) list in Assam, another such list is likely to be prepared for Kendrapara district for which the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has written a letter to the Registrar General of India (RGI).
The letter has been written based on the report given by amicus curiae Mohit Agarwal appointed by the Orissa High Court. Last year, Agarwal had submitted his report before the court for publication of NRC list in Kendrapara.
The Home Ministry in its correspondence to the RGI said that it was related to the matter of NRC in Kendrapara district of Odisha as per the established norms it was sent to the former’s office for consideration.
The letter written by the Home Ministry claims that earlier the ministry had received the communication from Agarwal about the submission of the report to the Orissa High Court seeking NRC in Kendrapara and seeking directions from the state and Centre on the matter. It also said that the HC had last year directed the Forest and Environment department to consider the report and take action accordingly.
The Forest department comes to the picture as many Bangladeshi immigrants were given space in the forest lands, mainly in Mahakalpara area of Kendrapara district. As per the government’s own records, Odisha is home to around 3,800 Bangaldeshi migrants while the actual number may be much higher.
