OAS officer’s father-in-law sent to jail for raping, impregnating minor domestic help

Jajpur: A man, identified as Prafulla Chandra Mohapatra, father-in-law of a senior OAS officer, was sent to jail after his bail plea was rejected by the court in Jajpur district Monday.

Mohapatra was arrested November 5 for raping and impregnating a tribal minor housemaid. Mohapatra is father-in-law of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation, Deputy Zonal Commissioner, Pramod Prusty.

Mohapatra had been undergoing treatment at Capital Hospital after he developed some health issues following his arrest.

He was produced before the Jajpur Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court Monday and as his bail plea was rejected by CJM Jeevana Nanda Padhi, he was sent to the Jajpur jail.

Notably, accused Mohapatra was arrested by a special investigating team (SIT) of Jajpur police for raping the domestic help. He was nabbed from the OAS officer’s residence in Sailashree Vihar of Bhubaneswar. According to Jajpur police sources, action will be taken against the OAS officer as per the Child and Adolescent Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, as amended in 2016.

The minor girl is now five months pregnant. The girl’s mother who is a native of Nanapur village in Jajpur district had lodged a written complaint at Balichandrapur police station November 1. In her complaint she alleged that her daughter was repeatedly raped by Mohapatra for close to six months.

Her daughter had returned home during Dussehra. When questioned, her daughter had narrated the horrific ordeal she had to go through after which the incident came to light.
