Odisha: 17 custodial deaths reported in last three years, says MoS Home

Bhubaneswar: As many as 17 custodial deaths were reported during the last three years in Odisha, MoS Home Tusharkanti Behera told the state Assembly Monday.

While replying to a question from Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia (BJP), the Minister said that during the period, 9,495 rapes, 4,243 murders, 38,329 theft and 1,692 dacoity cases were registered.

During the period as many as 14 hardcore criminals were arrested in exchange of fire.

Behera said indiscipline was reported in 52 places where the political parties conducted rallies and meetings during the last three years.

Police resorted to firing 59 times to avoid an unwanted situation of which police resorted to firing 57 times to counter the Naxal activities and twice in two other cases.

The government has set up 36 new Police stations in the state recently keeping in view the law and order situation, rise in population, crime rate, and demand of the People’s representatives, the Minister said.

With this the number of total police stations in the state has gone up to 679, he said.
