Cuttack: The body of a theft accused, who fled from the custody of the cantonment police station in Cuttack Friday, was recovered from Mahanadi river near Jobra barrage Saturday, said a source.

The deceased has been identified as Sankarshan Behera alias Bablu.

The source said that Sankarshan was brought to Bidanasi police station three days back in connection with a theft case and later handed over to cantonment police.

During interrogation, he allegedly pushed some police personnel and escaped from the police station Friday.

His family members alleged that though Sankarshan was not involved in any crime he was taken away by police and he fled from the police station to escape police torture.

A police officer said the incident would be inquired into and action will be taken on the basis of the report.
