Odisha completes arguments in Tribunal Vamsadhara water dispute

New Delhi: The state government Wednesday completed its arguments in Vamsadhara Water Dispute Tribunal (VWDT) raising certain objections with regard to the implementation of the award of the Tribunal on Vamsadhara River dispute between Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.

The state government has placed their arguments on seven points before the three-judge bench of VWDT comprising Chairperson Dr MK Sharma, Justice BN Chaturvedi and Justice Pratibha Rani.

The matter has been adjourned till April 2.

The Union government will reply April 2 and Andhra Pradesh will make submissions April 3 and 4.

An unnamed official from Andhra Pradesh said that the Tribunal has constituted a committee for the water management at Neradi barrage. The Odisha government has requested for appointing a member in the committee from a state other than Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.

The Odisha government also submitted that the Side Weir has been constructed without the permission of Central Water Commission (CWC).

The state government reportedly asked for a survey of Vamsadhara river from Kashinagar to Gunupur (around 37 km) to check for the amount of silt deposited after the construction of barrages.

Earlier, the Tribunal had asked both the states to hold a meeting of technical experts from both the sides and find an amicable solution to the issue. However, the meeting failed to yield any solutions.
