Odisha: Court sentences man to life imprisonment for killing wife

Balasore: A court in Odisha’s Balasore district Friday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for killing his wife.

The additional district and sessions judge of Balasore, Biswajit Das also imposed a penalty of Rs 6,000 on the convict Bijay Das.

Das, a resident of Koilisahi under Basta police station was found guilty by the court.

“The court after examining 16 witnesses and 20 exhibits held the accused guilty and awarded the punishment, life term in jail along with Rs 6,000 fine and a further one year term in case he failed to pay the penalty sum,” said Special Public Prosecutor Pranab Panda.

According to the prosecution, the police took action against the accused based on the FIR filed by the sister of the deceased December 27, 2020.

In the complaint, it was stated that Minati Das was regularly tortured physically as well as mentally by the accused even after eight years of their marriage for non-fulfillment of dowry demands and he killed her the previous night.

The accused was tried under several sections of IPC, said the public prosecutor.
