Baripada: A crane driver who was engaged to remove a wrecked truck from the road died and an ASI was injured after a speeding car ran over them near Baripada in Mayurbhanj district Tuesday morning, a source said.
According to the source, a truck moving from Baripada towards Balasore overturned on National Highway 18 in Baripada Tuesday morning. On being informed, ASI Pradeep Rout from Baisinga Police Station reached the spot to look after the rescue operation. A crane was deployed to remove the mangled truck from the road.
While the rescue operation was underway, a car lost its control and hit the crane driver and the ASI, leading to the former’s death.
The ASI sustained critical injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
As per government data, road accidents in Odisha claim nine human lives on a daily basis. As many as 9,495 fatalities were reported in the state between 2019 and 2021 in road mishaps.
