Keonjhar: The Special Vigilance Court Tuesday handed down four years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) to a former MGNREGA assistant of Saharpada block in Keonjhar district while pronouncing the judgment in a Vigilance trap case.
The convict was identified as Lalit Kumar Mohanta, a former MGNREGA assistant of Saharpada block in Keonjhar district. The court also slapped a penalty of Rs2,000 on the convict, apart from the punishment. In default, Mohanta has been directed to undergo an additional two months of rigorous imprisonment.
The court awarded him the punishment under Section 7 of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
Mohanta was disengaged from his job after being caught while receiving bribe by the Vigilance sleuths in the year 2016.
Sources said Mohanta was caught red-handed while demanding and accepting bribe of Rs10,000 from a complainant to facilitate issue of work order in his favour for execution of the work under MGNREGA scheme, February 26, 2016.
Later he was produced in the court and remanded to judicial custody after the magistrate rejected his bail plea.
