Jajpur: A farmer found a gold coin from his farmland at Radhanagar village under Dharmasala block in Jajpur district.

Benudhar Nayak, the farmer, was ploughing his farmland Wednesday when he stumbled upon the coin. Nayak at first kept his discovery a secret but later confided in some of the elderly villagers.

As the news spread, anxious people from his and nearby villages are now making a bee line at his house to have a look at the ancient gold coin.

The coin weighs about 7.5grams and on one side, an image of a royal descent holding a torch embossed on it. And the other side has a figure of an animal. It also has two holes punched on it.

According to historian Nrusingha Charan Sahoo, the coin dates back to the second century and the image of the royal descent is of King Huvishka of Kushan Empire.

Notably, earlier many coins of gold and silver and several other items including earthen ware were also discovered from Radhanagar during an excavation by the Odishan Institute of Maritime and South East Asian Studies (OIMSEAS).
